Cet avion est le premier \u00e0 avoir effectu\u00e9 un tour du monde sans carburant ni \u00e9mission polluante pendant le vol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appareil monoplace \u00e0 moteurs \u00e9lectriques aliment\u00e9s uniquement par l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie solaire, le prototype Solar Impulse 1 (HB-SIA) puis l&rsquo;avion final Solar Impulse 2 (HB-SIB) ont \u00e9t\u00e9 construits \u00e0 partir de 2003 \u00e0 l&rsquo;initiative des Suisses Bertrand PICCARD et Andr\u00e9 BORSCHBERG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le prototype du premier avion, HB-SIA, p\u00e8se 1\u00a0600\u00a0kg pour une envergure de 63,4\u00a0m. Il est pourvu de 4 moteurs \u00e9lectriques de 10 ch chacun aliment\u00e9s par l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie fournie par 11 628 cellules photovolta\u00efques plac\u00e9es sur les ailes majoritairement. Sa vitesse moyenne est de 70 km\/h.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 2012 un deuxi\u00e8me avion, immatricul\u00e9 HB-SIB, sera r\u00e9alis\u00e9. Ce dernier n&rsquo;a toujours pas de cabine pressuris\u00e9e mais les pilotes peuvent s&rsquo;allonger compl\u00e8tement afin d&rsquo;effectuer des missions de longue dur\u00e9e, des travers\u00e9es sans escale d&rsquo;un continent et de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Atlantique. Dans l&rsquo;optique de r\u00e9aliser le Tour du monde, Solar Impulse 2 d\u00e9colle le 9 mars 2015 d&rsquo;Abou Dhabi avec des escales pour changer de pilote et pr\u00e9senter l\u2019aventure au public ainsi qu&rsquo;aux autorit\u00e9s politiques et scientifiques.
